Some things to consider when 3D printing with PC filament
While polycarbonate produces tough, flexible and highly durable finished products, printing with this material can be difficult to perfect.
PC filament requires very high print temperatures, and can often warp or ooze during the printing process – this is largely due to the fact that polycarbonate absorbs moisture from the air. However, these issues can be prevented by storing your PC 3D printing filament in air-tight containers free of any moisture.
Here is a list of the hardware required for optimal 3D printing with PC filament:
- Heated bed with enclosure, and temperatures of 80-120 degrees Celsius
- PEI build surface with commercial adhesive and glue stick
- Extruder with an all-metal hotend, and temperatures of 260-310 degrees Celsius
- No part cooling fan required for polycarbonate
At Phaser FPV, we recommend lowering your printing temperature to around 280 degrees Celsius if you notice that the PC filament has absorbed some moisture. This can prevent bubbles or other “blemishes” from appearing in the print.
